Popular demand has resulted in three new Tai Chi courses being offered in two local communities.
Two eight week programs will commence at Canowindra Primary Health Care Centre on Tuesday 20 May and one eight week program at the Gooloogong Community Club Rooms on Thursday 22 May.
Tai Chi developed as a martial arts form, with the philosophy that a movement can’t be performed well quickly unless it can firstly be performed slowly.
Studies have shown that Tai Chi is very beneficial in reducing blood pressure, increasing muscle strength and joint mobility.
It is also recognised as being effective in the prevention & management of depression & stress.
The free classes have been made possible through the YWCA Rural Wellbeing program, an Australian Government funded service designed to support small rural communities.
“In working in partnership with the local Community Health Service and consulting with the community itself, it was recognised that Tai Chi was an activity that people would certainly like to see available close to home,” local YWCA Wellbeing program Co-ordinator, Sandra Chrystall said.
“The practice of the gentle slow movements has been likened to a moving meditation, and practitioners of Tai Chi know that sweat and pain aren’t essential for physical gain. It’s an activity that can be practiced and enjoyed by all ages.
“Experienced Tai Chi Instructor, Cheryl Shervington has been engaged to conduct the classes and it is hoped that there will be sufficient interest to keep the classes going after the initial eight weeks,” Ms Chrystall said.
Canowindra classes will be held from 3-4.30, with afternoon tea available, and for those who can’t make it during business hours, 5.30 -6.30.
Registrations can be made at the Canowindra Primary Health Care Centre, Ryall Street – 63441314.
In Gooloogong the classes will be held from 1.30 – 3.00 with afternoon included. Registrations are being taken at Gooloogong Post Office, 6344 8371.
